Pitbulls can be tough to fit because of their neck shape and size, but collars can help keep a Pitbull safe and give you peace of mind. Collars serve a variety of purposes, but the most important thing is giving your dog some identification.

Pitbulls are an excellent family breed, so make sure your companion has the right identification and a collar that can help with training or other functions. While it isn’t a good idea to use a collar to attach a leash, it can be a useful attachment if you’re in an emergency with your dog. Your dog should get used to wearing the collar, but it needs to be comfortable and fit well for that to happen.

If you aren’t sure where to look for a good Pitbull collar, never fear. Our list of collars are durable and can stand up to your Pitbull’s power while providing comfortable wear. They’re made of long-lasting materials and can help make your life and your Pitbull’s life that much easier. Let’s take a look.

What to Look for in a Good Pitbull Collar

Pitbulls are excellent family dogs, but they do have a lot of power. A collar should fit well without blocking the airway and provide a comfortable fit for long term wear. You’re probably aware of how others feel about your dog’s breed, and a collar can help keep your Pitbull safe and make everyone around feel better.

Adult dogs need proper measurements and adjustments for collars that fit well. Adults can handle slightly heavier collars because of the power in their necks and shoulders, but you want to remember the temperature outside and check for chafing around the neck skin regularly.

Puppies will also need collars and should be trained early to be used to them. They should have breathable, lightweight collars that are comfortable. Otherwise, they may resist wearing them. If you give in now, you may never get your dog comfortable wearing a collar.

Seniors have earned some ease in their life, but that doesn’t mean you ease up on wearing a collar. Make sure the collar is light and breathable and also check that it doesn’t rub or cause discomfort.

The collar isn’t a leash attachment, but it should have that D-ring attachment in case of an emergency.

Pitbulls are too strong to be on leashes attached to their collars for long term because it can cause damage to the windpipe. Make sure you have a harness for that.

Different Types of Dog Collars for Pitbulls

There are a few different dog collar options that serve different purposes. Let’s take a look at your options to see what may be suitable for your Pitbull.

Everyday (Flat) Collars

You probably think of these when picturing collars. They’re comfortable for everyday use and feature rings that can hold tags for identification and shot records. They also have plenty of durability and are easy to clean. They use a variety of materials, but the most common is a woven material for durability.

Martingale Collars

These are also called “no-slip” collar and slightly tighten as your dog pulls. They’re typically used in conjunction with a harness to help with stability and have a safety mechanism to prevent it from closing completely around your dog’s airway. These are good for Pitbulls that have some aggression or fear around other dogs and people.

Electric Collars

These are good for training and can offer beeps, vibrations, or shocks as a last resort. If you have an unruly dog, these help give a signal for good or negative behavior. They’re easy to use and come with batteries and a remote typically.

Prong Collars

We do not recommend prong collars unless you’re a professional that works with very aggressive dogs. They can easily injure a dog if you don’t know how to use them and should only be used as a last resort when training alone isn’t going to help.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get the right size collar for my Pitbull?

Pitbulls have pretty thick necks, so you’ll want to measure carefully. You should be able to get two fingers underneath the collar. Any more and your collar is probably too loose. If it’s tough to get your fingers between the collar and your dog’s skin, it may be too tight. Pitbulls have a range of neck sizes, but the average range is 16 inches to 18 inches. Measure carefully, however, and look for a collar that adjusts for the perfect size.

What size collar should I buy for my Pitbull puppy?

Puppies should have lightweight collars preferably of nylon weave. Leather collars may look adorable, but they encourage your puppy to chew them up. Measure your puppy’s neck size and choose the correct fit. Don’t size up. Be prepared to have several collars as your puppy grows. If your puppy’s collar gets too big, it could be uncomfortable and cause your puppy to avoid wearing it.

Is it a legal requirement for a dog to wear a collar?

In many places, your dog must wear a collar when out in public. You should check your local laws, but in all honesty, a collar is a must. It’s for your dog’s safety and your peace of mind. As a bully breed, people have preconceived notions about Pitbulls. If your dog gets out, people may be less likely to return it safely if it’s perceived to be a stray. A collar helps bring your dog home safely.

Can I use a prong/choke collar?

These collars have their place, but they should only be used with a professional. When a dog’s life is in danger because of its aggressive behavior, a prong collar can help protect everyone. However, with someone untrained, they can be destructive. We don’t recommend a choke or prong collar in place of proper training. The basis for your dog’s behavior should be training. A prong collar may make the dog look more dangerous, but again, they can be very harmful to your dog. Avoid them and leave those collars to the professionals.

Can I use a leash on a collar?

Pitbulls are too powerful to walk with a collar attached to the leash safely. It can cause damage to the airway and gives you very little control. The only exception might be a Martingale style collar that goes in conjunction with a harness for stability.

Conclusion

Pitbulls are wonderful family dogs and have a terrible, but undeserved reputation. They’re a powerful breed, however, and will need collars that can hold up under pressure. Whether it’s a leather collar or a GPS, your dog should be wearing some identification every day just in case the worst happens.

Your sweet Pitbull is a wonderful part of your family. It needs a proper collar, however, and you may even want more than one collar for different purposes. As long as your dog has the correct identification and shot records, you’re compliant with the laws in many places. Make sure your companion is taken care of and have the right equipment.

They’re wonderful around adults and children and even other animals but unfortunately they are not nice to each other one minute you see them cuddling with each other at the next minute they’re fighting over something stupid. Unfortunately now to times of had to take 1 of them to the hospital due to cuts. The one that I’m always taking to the hauspital is the 1 that always starts it. Do you think a shot collar is going to do the trick I’m willing to do whatever it takes not separate them.
