Hill’s Pet Nutrition Recalls Canned Dog Food 2019
Hill’s Pet Nutrition has recalled some of its canned dog food due to potentially excessive levels of Vitamin D. Excessive levels of Vitamin D can cause sickness in pets, including vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss, according to the FDA.
The recall was first issued on January 31, 2019 and it originally included 25 variations of Hill’s Pet Nutrition canned dog foods. The recall has since been expanded a few times to include more lot codes. Hill’s has stated that the problem was isolated to the vitamin premix from a U.S. supplier used in its canned dog foods and was limited to specific lots.
The additional recalled foods include:
- Hill’s Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care with Lamb Canned Dog Food, 13oz, 12-pack
- Hill’s Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight Chicken & Vegetable Entrée dog food 12 x 12.8oz cans
- Hill’s Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care Chicken & Vegetable Stew Canned Dog Food, 5.5oz, 24-pack
- Hill’s Prescription Diet i/d Low Fat Canine Rice, Vegetable & Chicken Stew 24 x 5.5oz cans
- Hill’s Prescription Diet r/d Canine 12 x 12.3oz cans
- Hill’s Science Diet Adult Beef & Barley Entrée Canned Dog Food, 13oz, 12-pack

- Hill’s Science Diet Healthy Cuisine Adult Braised Beef, Carrots & Peas Stew Canned Dog Food, 12.5oz, 12-pack
Affected canned food was sold through retailers nationwide. The company added that no dry food or treats were affected.
In response, Hill’s has expanded their call center hours and tripled the number of people available to take customer calls, so they can take more time to speak with pet parents who have concerns.
The FDA is encouraging pet owners whose dogs may have ingested the affected lots to see a veterinarian immediately as a precaution and to dispose of affected foods immediately.
