R2-D2 is one of the best picks for a Star Wars dog costume since R2-D2 is a small, waist-height sidekick for the characters in the film. What better character for our dogs to accompany us than the main characters’ faithful companion?

The good news, too, is that R2-D2 costumes don’t require a lot of accessories or dangling parts. For the most part, they’re simple pieces that only require one or two sections of fabric or clothing to make the entire thing work. Let’s take a look at the best R2-D2 dog costumes you can find on the Internet.

What Is the Best R2D2 Costume for a Dog?

5 Best R2D2 Costumes for Dogs

Here are some of our favorite picks for R2D2 costumes designed specifically for animals.

Star Wars Pet R2D2 Costume

This is another R2-D2 costume from Rosie’s, although it’s got a slightly different print than the first version. This costume is also officially licensed and is very similar to the movie look but in this case, Rosie’s decided to make the colors a little more vibrant and the material just a little thicker so it’s more suited for dogs with darker fur or who might be a little more energetic than most.

It still comes with the cute cap that the first costume sported, as well as the arms sleeves that reach all the way down to your dog’s paws. The costume comes in variable sizes so you can choose the best fit for your pup. Like the previous pick, this costume should only be hand washed due to its overall flimsiness.

You may also wish to measure your dog’s legs since the sleeves of this costume reach very far down and may cover up your dog’s paws entirely. If this is the case, you can always take the sleeves off separately and still keep your dog in the rest of the outfit. Most people should still get that it’s R2-D2!

Star Wars R2-D2 Dog Hoodie

This Q costume is basically a hoodie with the R2-D2 look printed on the back. This makes it a very simple and easy to maintain piece of clothing that’s ideal for a dog that is going to run outside and get dirty frequently. While it’s still mostly white, this costume is a little tougher than the costumes from Rosie’s. You’ll be able to tell that it’s a bit thicker and more resistant to wear and tear.

It’s also entirely one piece, so keep this in mind when trying to fit your pup within the costume. The hoodie is attached to the back of the shirts and can be pulled up or pushed down easily. The back print looks a lot like R2-D2’s front casing from the movies. Keen fans will notice that the dimensions of each robotic parts have been blown up to make them more noticeable.

Overall, this is a great pick for dogs that might tear off flimsier costumes. The sleeves of this pick are a little shorter than the pair of costumes from Rosie’s, but they can’t be removed, either.

R2D2 Pet Costume in White and Blue

This handmade R2-D2 costume has been sown out of satin as the primary fabric. This makes the costume extremely light and comfortable for all pets and the people that carry them. In addition to the satin fabric forming the basis of the costume, you’ll notice sparkly sequins along the first ribbon of the dress and blue tape along the bottom of the dress skirt to add to the R2-D2 aesthetic.

There isn’t a screen print on the back of the dress since this is homemade, but the artist did use buttons and other craft materials to simulate the R2-D2 droid front so that it rests on your dog’s back. It’s a creative solution that still makes it clear to everyone exactly what character your dog is playing during Halloween.

The dress comes with a little white and blue bow that adds to the R2-D2 aesthetic. Its skirt makes it a great match for female dogs that are small and yappy. There are only a few of these made at one time, so hurry up if you think that this would be a perfect fit for your small dog. Unfortunately, there aren’t sizes suitable for larger dogs available when it comes to this costume.

R2D2 Star Wars Tutu Skirt for Dogs

While not a complete costume by any stretch of the imagination, this dog tutu could still be an absolute riot at any party or celebration you bring your pup to. The tutu is made of blue and white material to keep with R2-D2’s movie aesthetic, and it’s shaped in a poofy “bow” configuration. The costume is designed to rest around your dogs middle so that it wags and waddles as your dog walks around the room.

The colored material is attached to an elastic waistband that’s blue as well to preserve the overall color scheme. The fringe all approximate about 5.5 inches in length, so it’s not too large for small dogs. At the same time, this skirt isn’t really suitable for larger dogs, so keep this in mind if your pup is on the bigger side.

It’s easy to take on and off if your dog becomes annoyed or irritated with the constant tutu presence, and it’s so small that it’s hardly any effort to take with you to amuse your friends. It’s cheap, too, so hurry fast before the artist runs out of stock if the tutu idea has really grabbed you!

Accessories to Complete the R2D2 Look

Check out some of these “must have” accessories.

R2-D2 Bow Tie

This adorable bowtie might be the perfect accessory to your dog’s R2-D2 costume. The bowtie is decorated with Star Wars symbols and starships, while the centerpiece is a miniature R2-D2 LEGO figure. This makes the bowtie pop and might be perfect for the tutu costume we mentioned above to really hammer in the R2-D2 aesthetic.

As a bonus, it can be worn by humans as well you want to wear a silly costume to a mock formal event. The bowtie’s material is durable and machine washable.

Star Wars Dog Bandana

This cute bandanna is made out of a cotton blend and is stitched together through a handmade process. It’s very durable and is also double-sided, so no matter which way you put it you’ll be able to display a colorful cast of Star Wars characters that are drawn in the old comic style from books that were printed decades ago. It’s both retro and amusing.

The bandanna slips right over the collar and doesn’t require you to tie a knot. There are four sizes to choose from and this bandanna comes with free shipping, so you should definitely jump on the opportunity while it lasts. It’s a cute enough bandanna to wear on your dog even without the R2-D2 costume!

DIY R2D2 Costume: How to Make it at Home Yourself

If none of the above options have really caught your eye, let’s go over a quick homemade solution to make your dog look like R2-D2. This costume will include a ribbon tutu and a cap that’s modeled after R2-D2’s head.

For the tutu, all you need to do is measure a length of ribbon around your dog’s abdomen. We 18 inches on each side where the bow will be tied to give it a little slack.  For each piece of white, silver, gray or blue tulle (depending on your color preferences), you wanted to be twice the length of the actual skirt. This will give them room to fold back and pop out.

Fold the ribbon in half, then fold the pieces of tulle in half as well. Place the folded tulle in the middle of the ribbon. Next, place the tulle under the ribbon where you’ve folded it. Pull the ends of the tulle piece through the loop you’ve created and continue until the entire tutu is done. Easy!

For the cap, either take a regular helmet for a small child and paint over it or get a styrofoam half sphere from any arts and craft store. Simply paint atop the half sphere and use reference pictures from the Star Wars movies to make sure that it looks close to R2-D2’s actual head.

You can then use a hot glue gun to affix a stretchy headband to the inside of the helmet. Make sure that the stretchy headband has some room to breathe and flex since your dog will presumably want to open and close their mouth for the duration of the costume party. The headband should be given a few hours to totally dry before you try to fix it up on your dog’s head.

There you have it; your own handmade R2-D2 costume!
